DO

  • Be mindful of the amount and brand of toilet tissue you use. (Cottonelle, White Cloud and Northern are
       recommended.)

  • Have your tank cleaned regularly to remove sludge and greases before they cause a problem.

  • Make sure to use an oxygen-based bleach such as Clorox II.

  • Read the labels on your detergent to ensure that they are biodegradable and low-sudsing.

  • Use less water by installing water saving showerheads and aerators on faucets. Adjust toilets to flush with less
water and use a front-load laundry machine.
DON’T

  • Build anything over or within ten feet of the tank, filter bed, leach field or any other part of the septic system
(including driveways, additions or swimming pools).

  • Install a new water well anywhere near the system. Check recommended distance with the Ohio Board of Health
       prior to installing.

  • Let anyone drive heavy vehicles, such as cars or trucks, over any portion of the septic system.

  • Plant shallow rooted trees, such as willows or soft maples, near the system.

  • Put any of the following items down the drain (ever): grease, cooking fats, oils, coffee grinds, filtered cigarette
butts, facial tissue, paint, female sanitary products, table scraps, caustic liquids or water softener backwash.
